Occasionally, a luxury item will hit on that perfect balance between beautifully simple and elegantly complex, and the Bovet Recital 18 is a gorgeous example of this fine line. Dubbed The Shooting Star, this watch has plenty of functionality along with an ultra-sophisticated layout that would stop any lover of fine accessories in their tracks.
The Recital 18 is part of Bovet’s Dimier line, with rounded contemporary shapes and traditionally-positioned crowns. The entire package of the The Shooting Star is made up of curves and domes, including a domed sapphire crystal, an inclined case that gives the viewer a sense of depth, and hands that follow the contours of domed dials.
Travelers who frequently change time zones will find plenty of features on The Shooting Star to assist in staying up-to-the-minute. Minutes are adjusted via the crown, while hours are adjusted via a pusher between the lugs. The moon phases are indicated via a double-hemisphere indicator. On the other side, a cartographer-designed depiction of the earth in global format has a curved hand that indicates the current hour for any one of the 24 time zones available, which the user can switch through at will.
The two hemispheres move as smoothly as possible thanks to jeweled low-friction rollers that look as beautiful as the rest of The Shooting Star. The oceans on the earth globe, and the recessed cracks and craters on the moon phases indicator, are painted with Super LumiNova, which lights up in low light for a uniquely beautiful detail that brings out the kid in anyone (albeit a very stylish kid).
The case is made from white gold and measures 46 mm by 18.15 mm, and functions include retrograde minutes, jumping hours, hemispheric world time, and hemispheric moon phases. The manually wound Bovet Calliber 17DM01-HU has 5 days of reserve power. Only 50 of these watches were released for the 2016 edition, at a price point of around $281,950.
With the starry sky motif throughout all of the details, the hand-engraving, and the romantic overall approach, the Bovet Recital 18 communicates luxury and handmade style at every turn. It’s far from a subtle watch, and can even be whimsical at times, but if elaborately luxurious accessories are your style, it’s hard to think of anyone who would not be fascinated by The Shooting Star watch.
